My vision was to create an art piece that would depict the suffering of Saint Sebastian by combining elements such as the mask, representing a death mask and the driftwood, representing the tree to which he was tied. The three arrows, which were the vehicles of torture, no doubt represented to St. Sebastian his commitment to Christianity and its basic tenets, which are Faith, Hope and Charity. The shroud symbolizes the only cover allowed during his execution. The dry tears that stain his face represent the sadness for Christians, knowing the suffering that would follow after his death. The vines and leaves are symbols of life. |
